review 1: I'm relieved by how repulsed I was by this book; for a long time, nothing managed to unsettle me. Sade is unquestionably brilliant. This is a well-crafted story that unflinchingly shoves its message down your throat. The thing is, this shit happens in real life. Most of us avert our eyes when confronted with evidence of human depravity, but Sade forces us into a front row seat of this horrorshow. Was Sade perverted? In my opinion, no. He simply saw the abyss that is the human soul; to me, the book is a social commentary on power and evil. People who 'enjoyed' this book can check out the French movie, Irreversible.

... moreuthor, and while worse things are freely available on the internet in our times, I'd say the content and theme of this story are extreme.Probably not for the feint hearted. I'm not going to say I enjoyed it, but it's certainly interesting when you consider the time it was written. less
