review 1: Extraordinary. That's the word that comes to mind when I think of this book. Navigating the oceans over 250 years ago with nothing but a compass and the stars. Incredible. I didn't know much about Capt James Cook before I decided to read this book, but after enjoying another book by Martin Dugard, Into Africa, The Epic Adventures of Stanley & Livingston, I decided to give it a try...and I'm so glad I did. To be gone for years at a time - away from his family, battling disease , weather, cannibalism and mutiny - well I just can't comprehend it. I love to read about ocean voyages and this did not disappoint . I'd love to go to the Big Island of Hawaii and stand on the shores where Capt cook met his fate. A great read! Loved it!!
review 2: Excellent boo
... morek on the life and adventures of Captain James Cook. I love reading about these guys who got into these ships and sailed around the world with no navigational equipment other than compasses and the sun and stars. It is amazing to me that they found anything at all, much less little island chains in the middle of the Pacific. It also amazes me that most times their personality that allows them to do such things, also many times causes their downfall. Interesting read of those of you who enjoy history and adventure. less
