review 1: This character heavy literary courtroom thriller is less about the plot and more about the magnificent vernacular and the southern athmosphere. Thriller, perhaps, is a word too strong to be used here, but Clark's novel defenately is one hell of a page turner.Characrerizations are the main attraction here, but unfotunately that's where the problems lie too. A few times too often potrayals of people are drawn from the well of simplistic clichés and stereotypes. For example, distressed teen girl starts to wear black and use heavy eye liner. Come on... So, that's the reason for dropping one star. But, all in all despite these minor flaws, The Legal Limit is a gripping cain-and-able -kind of story full of intriguing details.
review 2: I enjoyed about 2/3 of this, bu
... moret it got soooo bad towards the end. The main character became excruciatingly self-righteous and the strange way he reacted to his best friend's revelation was offensive, awkward, and--worst of all--unrealistic, given their long history. It just got bad. I still want to read The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living because that's the one I remember getting good reviews back when it came out. This one I read because of the NYT Mag blurb on the front. Oh wells. less

Excellent book! Best mystery I have read in a long time. Very tense right up until the last.
