review 1: I thoroughly loved The Butterfly’s Daughter by Mary Alice Monroe and I anticipated something sort of similar when I purchased this book – but, sadly, I was really disappointed. I guess this proves my tastes do not extend to books about fantasy and fairy tales. I read that this was going to be about a mother who takes a new (and demanding) job in London after being faced with some tough years for she and her children in an abusive marriage. She is now determined to raise her two children in a stable well-grounded world – with no reliance on fairy tales or make believe. Imagine the difficulty she runs into when her flat in London is also occupied by an elderly lady who believes she herself is the real life Wendy from the James Barrie’story about Peter Pan and an A... moremerican Professor who believes in new concepts and ideas – with an emphasis on “believing”. Another reviewer commented that the author blurs the lines between reality and fantasy in this book – I agree with that and I guess, as a history major, I am stuck in the world of realtiy.I would give this another 1/2 if I could but, with some sadness on my part, a 2.5 is the most I can muster when I compare it to some of the other books I have enjoyed so much.
review 2: “Second Star To the Right” was delightful! It is so different than anything I’ve read before and that’s what intrigued me. This story mingled present day with a fantasy classic – could the fantasy be true? Or is it the figment of a crazy imagination?A present day family, Faye O’Neill, the single mother and her two children, Maddie and Tom, move to London and rent a flat, sandwiched between a visiting American professor living below, and a fascinating old woman named Wendy living on the floor above. Wendy claims to be the Wendy of Peter Pan fame. Could she really be? Faye is a complete non-believer, but Wendy (or Crazy Wendy, as some refer to her) opens up a whole world of fantasy that excites young Maddie and Tom. Lonely professor Jack comes alive with the joyous children running about and becomes a wonderful friend and mentor to the children, as well as a compassionate neighbor to Faye and sweet old Wendy. What transpires with these special characters is absolutely magical! I enjoyed the fascinating writing of Mary Alice Monroe (new author for me) and how she drew me in to such a far-fetched story, building it came on layer upon layer. Wonderful descriptions made me feel like I was right there with the characters in one of my favorite cities. The evening stars and hallway balls of light were magic, and the garden bloomed with enchantment. I let my imagination go and just lost myself in the possibilities... The last couple chapters gave me goose bumps. It was a wonderful escape - with a little romance thrown in!“Second Star…” gets 4 ½ stars from me, consequently a place in my growing library – perhaps to enjoy again when I’m as old as Crazy Wendy!*Just a tiny, almost insignificant note here, Mary Alice Monroe – a visiting professor from Cal would never don a Stanford sweatshirt. (I suppose he could have done his undergrad at Stanford, but that’s the only possibility.) I promise you that none of my family’s many Stanford grads would wear a Cal sweatshirt unless it said ‘Beat Cal!’ less

A fun book to read. Peter Pan for grown-ups. A bit predictable, but enjoyable.
