review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed this, and as I was reading, I also enjoyed how skillfully it was written. A good comic novel with believable characters, and heart, that's not easy. I checked it out from the library because I had listened to Mary Guterson being interviewed by Nancy Pearl on one of those Book Lust podcasts, and I was so impressed by Guterson that I wanted to read her novels. Now I'm going to read the other one, and then I'll have to wait for her to publish a third. Such a nice change to read a book that is set in Seattle.
review 2: Yes, the protagonist Rena steals her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend's dog after the boyfriend dumps her instead of popping the question, as expected. (Hence the title.) But Rena's life has "gone to the dogs" (where did that phrase
... more come from?) in other ways - she's a smart 30-something in a dead end job (a waitress) with a kooky family (parents recently divorced, mom dating weird Ron, sister suddenly become an orthodox Jew complete with broad wig selection and brood of kids) and now, no boyfriend. But the whining is kept to a minimum, Rena is a funny, self-deprecating Jewish girl, and suddenly there's a new guy Chaim (or is he really Chuck?) which makes this an entertaining read. less

This was a pretty good chick lit book. It was light and entertaining - not too predictable either.

I'm not a regular "chic lit" reader but this one slipped into my book group list! Enjoyable.
