review 1: This is a sometimes intense book because of the subject matter. Hannah has run away from her life growing up, which was full of abuse, and created a nice life and keeps her background in the background. Then one day her boyfriend, who is now the town sheriff calls to tell her that her mother has died and she has a niece (her sister has died as well) and she should come take care of the niece as they are all the family each other has left. Another somewhat predictable book but enough the storytelling moves this along.
review 2: Hannah ran away at 16 to escape an abusive home. No one has heard from her since. Now many years later, she must return her hometown after her parents and only sibling have died. She is to care for her teenage niece she has never met or k... morenew nothing about. This story is about their developing relationship, facing memories from her childhood and reconnecting with the boyfriend she left behind so many years ago. It was a quick read for me because I was drawn to the story and characters. The memories of physical abuse were disturbing but not gratuitous and were essential to the story. less
