review 1: I still like this series, but I'm afraid this one lost my interest a little more as each of the complicated schemes in it unfolded (first that of the bad guys, then that of the heroes). I felt teased by the Roman glamour tidbits at the beginning and toward the end, and I thought those would be great things to focus on somehow. But the action in and around Venice depended on such elaborate ploys and 'small world' coincidences that my suspension of disbelief went out the window.
review 2: This probably isn't a perfect book, five stars would mean it is, but I just loved this book so that is why I am giving it that. I like Mrs. Kowal's glamorist books a great deal. I love the way they are written, the stories, the plot, the characters and everything about them. ... moreThey just make me happy and feel good. That being said I very much enjoyed this book in every way. It is hard to imagine a heist novel being written in the style of Jane Austin but she pulls it off with great skill and grace. The plot is wonderful and like any heist story has many twists and turns. But it isn't just that plot that makes the book great, it is the two people at the center of it all; Jane and Vincent. Through all the hardships that they endure, through all the fights they have with each other, they both still love each other with everything they have. And no matter what happens they always will and will share a wonderful and pure love. That is what makes the book so great, in my option. That they have something so pure and wonderful and that they are willing to fight for it no matter what circumstances are in there way. less
