Glamourist Histories
review 1: From David at the Book Bin: "If you are fascinated by the world of Jane Austen, you should check out the series if Edwardian fantasy books by Marie Robinette-Kowal. The first book in the series, Glamour in Glass, gives us an intriguing mix if Edwardian manners and magic as our heroine, Jane, tries against all custom to carve out a place as a female artist of illusion and glamour in a male-dominated world."
review 2: Magic and Jane Austen? Got my attention Normally I stay away from re-tellings of many classic works of literature, including Jane Austen. But I came across this trilogy while looking at other books. I could not help but be intrigued. Magic in the world of Jane Austen? Sounds intriguing. Readers familiar to Austen will find Kowal's setting familiar:
... more spinster Jane is often overshadowed by her vivacious younger sister, but is highly talented in magic or "glamour." Along the way we meet dastardly and haughty suitors, young women who promise their hearts to dashing young men, parents/relations who scheme to marry off their children to so and so, minor characters who appear moronic and useless, etc. Sound familiar? Kowal weaves a tale of mostly romantic intrigue while magic is actually very much a side prop in the books. I was a little disappointed to see how little it was in this world (with not even an explanation as to how it came to be. And do they have anything like a Hogwarts?). I also felt the book was cliched overall, borrowing a little too heavily from Austen while falling into traps of climatic showdowns at the end of the book. Overall though, it was a pleasant way to spend a few hours. I actually have the next two books so I'll be checking out how the author makes a trilogy out of this. That said, I'm glad I picked it up from the library vs. buying it. less

A fun blend of Jane Austen-style Regency fiction with an element of magic.

Modernised historical writing. It reminded me a lot of Jane Eyre.
