review 1: inished reading Perfect Rigor by Masha Gessen, that describes a true story about Grigori Perelman, a Russian mathematician. Perelman successfully solved one of the Clay Institute's Million Dollar math problems in topology (Poincare Conjecture) but refused to accept the award or the prize money. While Perelman is still living in St. Petersburg the book was done entirely without his input because of his great disdain for the media and most people in general. The story is told through interviews with his teachers, professors and colleagues and forms an interesting image of a man that has become increasingly closed off from society. Pretty short book but a fascinating read about his life in Russian and his early success among rampant antisemitism.
review 2: The
... morere was something a little uncomfortable about reading a biography of someone who obviously would not have approved of such publicity. The writer sometimes wrote of her interviewees in a not entirely positive way, which made me squirm a bit.I had some difficulty in keeping track of names, especially since most of them were Russian and unfamiliar to me. However, the index at the end help somewhat in this regard. less
