review 1: I'm not a huge Matt Bai fan in general, but this is a good, and dare I say it, important read. It examines how changing cultural, technological and political changes converged in 1987 to bring down Gary Hart's presidential campaign over a silly sex (maybe) scandal, and how this was a watershed in how politics is covered and understood in the US. It's a convincing thesis IMHO and Bai's retelling of the scandal itself is readable. It also provides a corrective to the way the story has come down over the years. 1988 was the first presidential campaign I paid attention to, and I didn't realize that Hart's infamous challenge to reporters to follow him did not come before the Miami Herald did just that.
review 2: I couldn't put this book down. I actually told my husb
... moreand, "I have to see how this ends!" Which, of course I know how it ends, we all know how it ends: this is about the Gary Hart/Donna Rice scandal. But Bai's writing, his eloquent, engaging and driving narrative and passion had me hooked. I loved his thesis and thought he stunningly proved his point. Sure, there were small, momentary flaws but they were blips on an otherwise unmarred book for thinking adults interested in our current state of affairs. I highly recommend this book. less

Very interesting read about an issue with origins I was previously unaware of.
