review 1: Interesting enough, but let down by sloppy research and conclusions that seem tenuous at best (and, at worst, seem like Kaplan has completely ignored the obvious explanation to the question he's asking). Kaplan relies heavily on one particular source (The First Fossil Hunters, by Adrienne Mayor), and seems content to rely on the filmic versions of texts that he discusses rather than actually going to the source. It's an enjoyable read, though frustrating in many places, and I came away with the sense that Kaplan could have answered the question "Where do monsters come from?" with a simple "We don't really know".
review 2: Not what I expected yet not horrible either. I was surprised the author never mentioned the "Transylvania" history behind Dracula. Many of t
... morehe Greek monsters he researched had boring histories and weren't as frightful as some he failed to mention like the Cyclops. My favorite chapter was his final one when he dealt with aliens. I especially enjoyed his explanation of the movie, Avatar, since I missed it when it was at the theaters. less

I enjoyed this study of how monsters develop. I particularly enjoyed the footnotes. :)

Interesting explanations. Helps to understand why some of these superstitions exist.

Enjoyable. The many, usually cute, footnotes get tedious after a bit.
