review 1: I didn't love this book, although I really wanted to. The author seemed more interested in general history of the time than his main story line. There were far too many segues and non-sequitors for my liking; and there was something in the tone that made me think the author strongly disliked his subjects. At the end of the day this is too long to be worth picking up as a filler and probably not worth reading for fun.
review 2: Two different women circle the globe in 1890. The women are the story not their race and the contrast between the two. Both reporters when women reporters were very unusual. One wants to go and the other is sent. But, who has the better time? Who becomes the true traveler? How terrible to have the opportunity to see the world but ha... moreve to be constantly on the move and unable to enjoy and actually experience the trip. less
