review 1: More than a year passed between publication of the fifth Konigsburg book and this one. This time, neither of the main characters is related to those in the previous books, although they've both appeared as minor or supporting characters. In addition, both are Hispanic. One wonders whether this is Benjamin's nod to the changing demographic of Texas, to the fans of telenovellas, or simply to reality. Regardless, this romance is as much fun as the previous five. I'm eager to read the seventh and the eighth.
review 2: It could have been a great book. In fact it was pretty good in itself. The small town drama and connections, the lull of true love along with misdeeds and adventure drama? I loved it!What broke me, was the cheating. The main couple, which I loved
... more, broke up, because the hero cheated. This was all before the book started, so why did it bother me?There was a very little time frame between the rekindling of the romance and the brake up. It was not even one year after the fact!I know mountains can be moved in one year, but to me a year is insufficient to get over big hurts-not to mention too little time to mature and suddenly decide not only that you are ready to love, but even to marry? Really, it is just too much. Also, considering the hero and the reasons he did go out and cheated on his live-in girlfriend-at that moment I could have gotten over flirting, kisses and heavy petting. But he went out after a lame-assed fight and had full blown intercourse with an other woman. The hero delivers a big and pretty speech about being scared of her leaving, and even more scared of loving her and thus making her not leave…he tells me all about being mature and sure in his love NOW. Bah, for how long? When and what will unsettle his love again? Will he pick up some other woman after some other fight? Also, one more things in the same domain made me frown heavily. The nonchalance with which the cheating was treated. The hero is totally baffled with why the heroine left after not being able to get over the infidelity. He also states in his big apology that he cared nothing for the other woman and she cared nothing for him. Still, they had sex in front of the whole town in the back seat of a car, where, 50% the town saw him do her... Yeah. The creep. To me, not caring for the person you cheat with is not really relevant. ESPECIALY if your actions not only hurt somebody you claim to love but humiliate her in front of the WHOLE FU*KING community. If this is your way of hurting and getting back at a person for yelling at you, then by all means Mr. Hero, pack your bags, be gone, and stay gone. But this is just me.The me that until the very end wanted to hear that it's all a lie! There was never sex! Or even some big grand gesture, some off the charts apology that would make it sting a little less.Seeing as how none of this happened, I can only stay mad at the author for souring for me a super hero and a fun heroine. Not one bit of back-story can change that. less
