review 1: This was much different than her contemporary novels. It's split into 3 novella's that are all interconnected by the characters. I really thought after the first one, I wouldn't finish the book because I didn't really like the premise of the "order of the solace." But, I did finish it and it was okay. Weird, but okay. I don't think I'll read another in this series and I'll be sticking to her contemporaries!
review 2: This book has three novellas in it.The 1st NovellaStillnessStillness is a Handmaiden of the order of Solace. They are named for there exquisite services that best reflect their true calling. Their greatest pleasure is granting solace, to those they serve. Stillness is chosen by the order for Edward. It is her mission to soothe his consciense. Edwar... mored is a man whose friendship was destroyed after a sexual act between him and his friends left someone dead. They have tried to keep it bottled up, this tragedy and the result of Edwards turmoil. Each Novella in this book has been caused from this one tragedy. Now each man must heal.But what Edward needs is Love... That is the one thing a Handmaiden is forbidden to offer. Stillness does break through Edward's shell and gives the man his peace. In the end is she willing to break the rules?The 2nd NovellaHonestyHonesty is a Handmaiden of the order of Solace. She is chosen for Cillian who is a very troubled prince. But she doesn't take the time to study her patron because she is tired of being a Handmaiden and if she fails it doesn't matter to her. But when she finds Cillian sobbing she decides to try to hive him solace. Cillians background is tough because of the tragedy that has occured in the past with his friends. Because Cillian paid the highest price for the death. Now to get solace it may be near impossible. He is being blackmailed. He wants his friendship back with Edward and these are things a Handmaiden can only help with so far, Cillian has to do the work. In the end Cillian shows just how smart he really is to get one over on the blackmailer.The 3rd NovellaDeterminataDeterminata is a Handmaiden of the order of Solace. She uses the name Mina with her new patron Alaric. He has plunged himself into the bowls of hell. His two dearest friends Edward and Cillian have sent for a Handmaiden for him, hoping that she can snap him out of his misery. He has become addicted to drugs after the breakup with his last mistress. In his loneliness he has become a complete hermit. He is obsessive with his memory of his past mistress. Mina has her work cut out for her. She however is the perfect candidate for this mission. Once Alaric gets off the drugs and really looks at his Handmaiden Mina, he doesn't miss the ole mistress anymore. It just takes awhile. less
