review 1: My father sent me this book and curiously at age 94 he is discovering through Margaret Fuller's life and writings the extent of difficulties she had in putting her capacities to good use. Finding her path as a young gifted owman in the 19th century was exceeding difficult; her networking and determination and her cheerful courage flowered none the less. A path of hope...unfortunately she died too young.
review 2: To be brilliant has it consequences and its rewards. Margaret Fuller was an incredibly intelligent, articulate woman in a culture that did not particularly appreciate such traits in a woman. Her tenacity coupled with the need to 'conquer' provided her with the foundation necessary for her to succeed. She was a woman before her time and yet of it. ... more For most of her life it seems that while she searched for love and acceptance and that true partner, she did not feel the need for commitment or for physical intimacy. That changed when she moved from the still puritanical America to Europe where she met her intellectual equals who did not believe in the 'purity' of love. I am actually happy that she found a man that she loved intimately even if he was not her intellectual equal. I found the book to be excellent. A good portrait of an incredible woman. I just wish that we could hear her speak today...I wonder what she would say. less
