review 1: 3rd-6th Grade Read-Aloud: The kids really enjoyed this book. We discussed how the book looks fiction because of the illustrations, but it is actually nonfiction. This reinforces the fact that one must READ the book before putting it in a category. This is a great way to introduce young students to the powerful, inspiring story of Seabiscuit. We watched the actual race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral on You Tube. The kids were cheering for Seabiscuit even though they knew he would win. Great read-aloud experience!
review 2: McCarthy provides a playfully illustrated introduction to Seabiscuit, a horse that raced in the 1930s. In this short book, readers are provided glimpses into who Seabiscuit, jockey Red Pollard, fellow jockey George Woolf, owner Charles How... moreard and trainer Tom Smith. Team Seabiscuit's rivalry with War Admiral plays a role, though it was justifiably condensed in its inclusion in this book.As a former camp counselor at a riding camp, I can say this book will appeal to horse lovers. I love the expression on McCarthy's horses throughout this book. less
