review 1: Before I start, let me warn that I never finished this book. I couldn't. I was looking for an easy realistic fiction read which I could find relatable. And this wasn't that. So maybe I had my expectations in the wrong place. But if this was a little bit less silly, I would have definitely liked it more. This book never let me feel like I was looking at a middle schooler. It felt as if I was reading a Junie B. Jones book. The characters logic was very similar. Fine and all, but not what I wanted. Now first let me say that this book is completely unrealistic. When I was in the sixth grade, I did super stupid things like all people. But nothing like this girl. Nothing relatively close to this girl. This girl is just.......... *sigh* here's an example. OH, I HAVE A CONTACT FOR ... moreMY EYES BUT I NEED TO MAKE IT MOIST. I KNOW WATER IS BAD FOR IT SO I'LL JUST PUT SALIVA ON IT BECAUSE SALIVA REMINDS ME OF TEARS. SO OF COURSE I WOULD PUT IT IN MY MOUTH, SUCK ON IT, AND... OOPS GUESS WHAT?! IT DIDN'T GO AS I PLANNED! Here I am banging my head against a desk. Are you kidding me? Even if that made sense wouldn't you just spit on it? Wait, there's more! This same girl (the main character) ends up puking on Sara and, of course, Sara ends up being the main character's best friend. No! I've been through middle school and it's so hard being friends with popular people! They end up neglecting, ignoring, or being fake nice to you. After throwing up on one she won't look at you for the rest of your days unless it's in disgust. Now of course there are many exceptions and I went through just guessing Sara was very forgiving. But wait! The main character gets popular too! How? By playing kickball with a broken arm. I'll just stop here.
review 2: Why 5 stars? - For my daughter. I was thinking of my daughter reading this. She is 10 and I thought about what good messages it had. While it wraps up a little too neatly (my middle school girl drama was meaner), you really do like the characters and the trouble they get themselves into. Are the characters well developed? No, its a middle school read. But its perfect for the 10 year old.Is the plot clever? It is actually. Pretty cute too, and it has real-life situations. And possible solutions how to deal with them. Will I want to read the other books? Probably - I mean, I want to know what the fake boyfriend wars is about now.Is it appropriate for teens? You bet - clean, no language, and a good message about bullying too. Will I get bored? I doubt it. I stayed up late to finish it. (not that is was that long anyway). Its cute and you wonder when the madness is going to stop. And you keep reading to see if Nicole's mom loses her cool. less
