review 1: 4.5 starsSo, I've gone about adding these to my shelves a bit backwards. This was actually the second book by Meredith that I read. In fact, less than a week ago Meredith Shayne was not even on my radar. I think I'd noticed her books (the cover for Metal Heart seemed familiar) but I hadn't hit "lucky." Well now I've hit lucky.Circumstances led me to a short read by her, a free one in an anthology that I was aware of but had put in the "to read" pile. To cut a long story short, I read it. "Cutting Out" is special to me now for numerous reasons, not the least of which, it led me to this wonderful author.A search of what else she had written took me to DSP, which luckily had a 25% off sale, and I stocked up.So, this brings me to "Whitewater." The pretty cover, the shorter len... moregth, both these reasons had me starting it first. What kept me enthralled and unable to put it down was the wonderful writing, the true characters, the baking—yummo—and the amazing settings (helps I know those areas so well and could immerse myself in the world so easily). And most importantly, this story is real. People are not perfect, and these characters are flawed, and Meredith shows that with absolute integrity in the way she approaches it through her writing.Fabulous!
review 2: This is a shorter story and depending on your device and ebook version around 100 pages. It is however a good read. It has good development of characters and relationships which is normally missing in shorter stories. The main characters are Luke and Cam(eron). All Luke knows about Cameron is that he's a surfer. He has admired him for a while, but never dared to talk to him. Cam has seen Luke many times at the beach and every time he wants to talk to Luke he has disappeared. That all changes when Luke is curious about a café and decides to taste their pastries. As a baker, he wants to see what the competition is like. And he didn't like what he ate at all. Cue Cam who sees Luke sitting in his café. Luke complains about the food and they talk about a deal: Luke's bakery would provide pastries for Cam's café. But that changed when Cam saw Luke limping away.At first Cam doesn't want much to do with Luke. All he wanted was maybe a fun fuck, but he started worrying about it and didn't want it to seem as a pity fuck. After a few weeks not seeing Luke he finally decides to visit his bakery and their friendship start from their.During the story you see Cam grow up. His life was surfing and partying and he had lost his passion for cooking. Going to his café wasn't fun anymore, it was a drag. Having Luke in his life and seeing how much Luke enjoyed baking made him rediscover his passion. He also seems to care more about Luke and about relationships in general. It's a good, sweet story with great progression and development. Greatly done for a short story. less

Sweet, no sex. Well written, very quick read. Maybe a little overpriced for the length.
