review 1: Read this because of its inclusion in the Tournament of Books. Not even really sure what to say, very flowery writing, overly poetic and lots of craziness. Basic story had potential, father takes sons into a deserted game reserve to live, telling them the rest of the world is gone. For most of the book we don't really know why, the mother is dead, killed by father? we don't know. The book didn't work for me. The poetic insights into life and love were abundant, but that doesn't make for a good story.
review 2: I'm not sure what I didn't like about this story, why I didn't give it five stars. Perhaps the ending gave away too much? The description of the African landscape and how a man manipulates it's vastness for his benefit, but in a way it seems he can
... more only understand, made me feel like perhaps the ending should've been more secret, like the main character himself. Regardless, I love the author's style. I am going to search out other works by him. If you enjoy Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Isabel Allende, you'll enjoy this darker, mysterious, beautiful, melancholic flavour in writing. less
