review 2: why Mia james? why??! i was so excited for this book and waited ages to get my hands on the 2nd in ravenwood/by midnight trilogy, I will start with the bad points, darknes
... mores falls starts off immediately where the first book by midnight left off april recovering after a psycopath tried to kill her in a similar fashion to the other killings in Highgate area, she is well aware that she is going to a school of deadly vampires and decides to take risks further by mixing with them, knowing full well that one of them killed her father - despite it being mentioned in the first book that the headmaster aka The Hawk is the guy whom every vampire recruiter reports april seems to not take that fact seriously or acknowledge it at all, she is more interested in the fact that her mother might be going out with hawk, agreed april has had a lot to deal with but does that affect her ability to think clearly and be rational, surely such events would make you more cautious and alert to even breath, not in this case, our protagonist is more interested in being a normal teenager in abnormal circumstances and her sweetheart vampire boyfriend gabriel, ok he saved her life in the cemetery where she was almost dead and got himself infected with her fury virus and oh, also sort of, mentioned that he loves her, can we rewind a minute?? they have known each other for what 6 weeks maximum at this point, and already their relationship has reached the skies.. what? the relationship is still rocky, gabriel is dying because of the virus which means that unless a cure is found soon he will suffer a similar fate to milo from the first book and his weakness/ subsequent death means that vampires are becoming aware that a fury is among them and how long will it be b4 they discover her, the romance is definately more hotter in this novel than the first one, however it comes to a standstill after gabriel is cured ... there are mentions in the plot of jack the ripper and queen victoria's connection with vampires that made this more exciting... but unfortunately they are also left hanging, hopefully this will be clarified in the final novel of this trilogy and aprils mum is even more strange and secretive, the whole time april seems to be running around, following other ppl when the answer might be in her own home, oh and this annoyed me at the end of by midnight aprils mum and grandfather said that they need to sit and have a serious talk, implication that they will tell her she is a fury and probably shed light on more details that she needs to be aware of but no that meeting never happens but her mother does mention that she cheated on aprils dad while they were married, her mother also lies about the fact that she is still seeing hawk leading to april eventually leaving her mother and staying with her granddad again wheres her brain?? even he has lots of secrets hidden from her. simiar to the first book the main action takes place in the final 3rd of the book, this is where the plot gets interesting, I never though that would happen but it is pretty good. The good points are that certain character like caro is still intelligent and witty and a great support system for a reckless protagonist, a few characters are killed off from the first novel not ones that i expected, i liked that miss holden helped her with the virus antitode potion but even she felt like a pain in the arse at times, she pretty much wanted april to figure it out on her own,the guardians as she called it were suppose to help april understand her role as a fury they didnt help much at all they didnt even make an appearance in the novel, perfect! it is also implied that gabriel has something to hide and might be jack the ripper himself, overall definately a lot more action but a lot less answers, more twists and turns more dead ends... i think for me this novel was indeed suffering the middle book syndrome but i have given 3 instead of two stars because despite the frustration this book caused me lol I still am a pathetic fan girl of this series otherwise I wouldnt do a lenghty review such as this, i wish the final installment would come sooner and all the riddles are cleared up... less
