review 1: When I first saw this book I was super thrilled that it involved the supernatural,a gay main character and a M/M romance. However my excitement dwindled when I actually started reading the book. Well I think Michael Griffo tried to write a different and enticing world he failed. The writing of the book was horrible, I felt like I was reading a 12 year olds first fanfiction. Not only was the writing not up to standards the book was confusing. The plot was barely there and when it was it seemed pointless. There's not much to say about this book other than I highly disliked it. I would not recommend buying it.
review 2: I started this book with the best intents. It started in an interesting way, and for a bit it led me to believe it would actually be a good reading
... moreexperience. No it didnt remind me of Twilight, which was actually a point in its favor. Then something started going wrong.Michael, the main character, after the first few pages started to become too much of a whiney wimp. Oh well, so many main characters start off in similar ways, and evolve throughout the book. But Michael. Didnt lose his interior wimpy quality, in a short while he just added up a sort of self confidance (completely out of place with his own inner dialogues) that makes him behave in the strangest ways. Just to name an example: feeling a strong competition with his love interest's brother (!), he blurts out something along the line of "I'll tell him, let's see whom he will choose!". I mean, please.I really didnt find any likeable character. Michael is a selfish drama queen; in spite of his apparent inner thoughts, he behaves like careless even in front of the death of his mother, crumping in a ball the last letter his mother left him before killing herself. Throughout the book, there's never a though he gives about anybody.Ronan, Michael's love interest, is just as selfish. Using the few gestures of kindness toward his brother just as an excuse to look good with his mates. He is kind of monomaniacal, All he seems to care is "he has to be with Micheal". No other real interactions with his fellow characters.Ciaran, Ronan's half brother, is kind of a borderline case, but that at least awaken some sense of pity in the readers.Nakano, Ronan's ex boyfriend, is an annoying psychopath. Not likeable or interesting even as a bad boy or villain. Really, only thing I can think of when I read a paragraph about him is "Oh, why doesnt he just die".Brania, the villain, is basically a vampiric queen bee. We are not let much in anything more that. And so on, with all the characters. I couldnt find a single one I could like. Many interaction, ideas, characters went unexplored. The characters never gain any depth, and stay basically unchanged from the first impression. And then the storytelling. While there're merits about the story, at least in concept, the continuous change of POV is so sudden, confused and confusing, that it could surely use a good new editing. I understand the author is experimenting with narrative, but he doesnt see able to merge the seams between paragraphs.Anyway, in spite of all the flaws, I did finish the book. So, it wasnt so bad I had to quit it. The ideas werent bad, and led me toward the last page. But I sincerely hope that the author's editors will make their appearence a LOT more conspicuous in the sequels. less
