review 1: This is an awesome book! The writing is very engaging and, combined with the wonderful photographs, brings Gail Halvorsen's story to life. Known as "Uncle Wiggly Wings" and "Chocolate Uncle" he created "Operation Little Vittles," a part of the Berlin Airlift that dropped candy and gum to the children of Berlin at the end of WWII. The stories of the recipients of these sweet treats, told through the cards and letters that Halvorsen received, are touching and introduce the reader to the lives of ordinary Berliners in a post-war Germany. There are historical notes, to put Halvorsen's story in context, and a complete index.
review 2: After world war II Gail Halvorsen is a pilot in Germany. He flies cargo planes full of food for people of Germany. Then one day
... more he meets children and learns that they are humble and grateful for the food that they have been given he decided to give them candy as well. Without permission from his boss Lt. Halvorsen decides to drop three parachutes of candy off of his plane for some of the children of west Berlin, Germany. This book is an inspiring tale of how one person can impact many lives. Gail Halvorsen was interview by the author and the details seem fairly accurate. The photographs in this book tell the story of how this idea grew from a small idea to a huge movement. less
