review 1: David Norcross is a US District Judge in Massachusetts, and faces the unsettling prospect of providing over a death penalty case in a no-death-penalty state. When a pediatric nurse is killed in a drive-by shooting targeting a gang leader, Peach Delgado, the powers-that-be are out for blood, the shooter's blood, and so begins a swift, wild ride through the lives of several characters and the justice system. The author, Michael Ponsor, is also a sitting judge, and brings alive the experience of the courtroom for everyone--judge, clerks, defendants, attorneys, witnesses, and family members. Woven into the contemporary story is a reexamination of the arrest, conviction, and execution of two men hanged by mistake in 1806 and exonerated by Governor Dukakis in 1984. The standards... more for evidence and argument have changed dramatically over the years and yet the quest for justice still takes bizarre and often soul-crunching turns on its path.
review 2: I liked this one. I'm a big fan of courtroom procedural/drama stuff and this had a fair bit of that. The writing can be a little awkward and clunky at times, but I liked that the author is actually a sitting judge who (presumably) knows what he is talking about as far as all the courtroom stuff. There is definitely some strong political bias, but it didn't bother me. If that bothers you, then you might want to take a pass on this one. Overall, I liked it quite a bit. less
