review 1: I saw this book on display at the NYPL and was drawn to it because of its title. We are all of us guilty of stuffing something at some point into a book as a makeshift bookmark, only to unearth it months or years later and enjoy a moment of recollection over the discovery. Michael Popek is afforded this opportunity all the time as the owner of a used book shop, and he has collected some of his more memorable discoveries in this charming book. Some of the bookmarks have no relationship at all to the book in which they were discovered; others are hauntingly appropriate. For example, one forgotten item is a typed out copy of the poem "A Prayer for my Daughter" by Yeats, found tucked into the pages of a book on teenage cutting. It is a fast read and a bemusing one as well... more. This is a worthwhile book if you're looking for something to read when you've just finished a novel and are not sure what to read next.
review 2: This was a fun book. I love the idea of working in a used bookstore and getting to make these kinds of discoveries for myself. Several of these forgotten bookmarks were poignant or set me to dreaming. I was bummed that he didn't include the marijuana leaf that started the whole thing. The letter from the military son to his mother, pleading that she visit him before he shipped out made me so very sad. I probably wouldn't buy this one, but I sure am glad I read it. less
