review 1: I am a Michael Prescott fan! I have read almost all of his books, and the couple I have not read are in my "to be read" list. So, I like all of his books - but to be fair I like some more than others. This one is somewhere in the middle of the pack. I think he does a good job of interweaving the story and characters to make you think you have it all figured out, but do you?? I like that. He is also a master of the "ah-ha" moment, which literally made me gasp!! I like the premise/plot... but I was annoyed by the character of the "Celebutant" Chelsea. (I listened to the audio book via Audible and this may have had more to do with the narrator than the author)! Some of the relationships also seemed a little far-fetched, but it’s also part of what makes it all come ... moretogether… so, I guess crazier things have happened! It is a work of fiction, after – all! I try not to over think what I read – I like to take the story for what it is and go with it! It doesn’t have to be logical, it just has to be entertaining, and this was! Like many Prescott books, it has the pace of an episode of “24” and the main character in this book, Kate, is the “Olivia Pope” (Scandal) of the personal security world. If you avoid graphic content, avoid this… I do think some of it was overkill (pun intended)! Overall, it kept me interested. It makes for a thrilling read!
review 2: My true rating of this book is more like 3 1/2 stars. I picked this book up for an afternoon read, and before I knew it, several hours had passed, it was dark outside, and I had finished the book. This was the first book I'd read by Michael Prescott, but it won't be the last. The basic plot is: former nun turned bodyguard for the celebrities is on the case when a teenage star is kidnapped by a psychopath. The bad guy reminded me of some of the similar types found in earlier Dean Koontz novels - sick, sadistic, twisted, and believes he's all-powerful. Violence is plentiful, but not over the top, and the characters might not be completely believable, but enough so that I lost myself in the book for an entire afternoon. less
