review 1: This was a neat idea. It gives some interesting info, enough for me to finish reading the book. But sometimes the writing wasn't very good. There were odd words and phrases where I would have to reread to determine what he was really trying to say. It sometimes seemed disordered. Other times it gave us unnecessary info but left out info that would have been helpful. Would have benefited from a good editor or at the least a proof reader.
review 2: An informative although dull and uninspired reading. Almost lacking any originality or personality of its own. It is mostly for Rank a matter of telling the explorer in question did this, and was there, and then went over there, and did that, and this happened to him, and that did not happen to him, and he saw that, an
... mored that was done to him... I think one is much better off reading the books Rank has used (his bibliography) to create this menu-like book. And then we come across phrases like this one: “Here we see that Marco Polo was able to travel such great distances for the same reason as...”, as if Rank were addressing High School students and not seasoned readers. But the crown would have to be given to the following statement, in all the glory of its illogical absurdity: “The 21-year-old set off for his journey the year before he died in 1324.” less

Brilliant account of some intrepid travellers who in their own ways fostered globalisation...

Interesting biographies of 11 explorers. Easy to read and quite informative.

An interesting view of some of some of the most far traveled explorers.
