review 1: I always really enjoy reading about author's lives and how their experiences contribute to their writing. E.B. White was the youngest child in his family and really enjoyed the outdoors. He was a lonely soul and seemed to struggle with issues of self confidence. As an adult, he marries a very gracious and kind woman who seems to really fulfill him. They met while working together at the New Yorker and she encourages his work. They purchase a farm and White really enjoys much of the work involved in having a farm. It seems that he draws on his life experiences while writing Charlotte's Web. Prior to the completion of Charlotte's Web, he completed a great deal of research into spiders and spent a great deal of time observing them. The book also touches on Garth Willi... moreams, the illustrator of Charlotte's Web, and gives a bit of his history particularly as it pertains to E.B. White's books.
review 2: A charming biography of E.B. White, called Andy, covering his lengthy career on the staff (nearly since its inception) of The New Yorker, where he met his wife, his early life in a well-to-do family in Mount Vernon, NY, college at Cornell, and finally his three children's books--Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, and The Trumpet of the Swan. This biography focuses mostly on Charlotte's Web, since the farm life described came so much from Andy's personal life. "He hadn't planned the book as a summary of what it felt like to be E.B. White, but by the last page it had preserved in amber his response to the world." Stuart Little had been written from a collection of short stories he shared with his nieces and nephews; The Trumpet of the Swan came nearly 20 years after Charlotte's Web. less

Never finished the book. Needed to move on. Not that boring. But I needed a novel.

I gave this about an hour's try and just couldn't get into it.

Meh. Could have been an essay instead of a full-length book.
