review 1: What a wonderful story - about a man living a dangerous life. After being a party to two separate tragic accidents, the main character, Henry, makes a conscious decision to change from a rough and tumble drifter into a caretaker of the people and places of his home. I wasn't sure I would get through this book for the first 50 pages, as the author's writing style took some getting used to. The dialogue and the narrative run together and the reader needs to pay attention. But it was well worth the effort. Descriptions of some of the events that take place as Henry builds his home and family are so powerful. Really a good novel. I will look for other books by Michael Winter.

On the surface, Minister Without Portfolio is the story of a man named Henry who returns home from Afghanistan after a disastrous stint with a civilian contracting crew. Emotionally ravaged, he must begin to put the pieces of his life back together. Slowly, he begins to recover and adapt to a new normal. The beauty of the novel lies underneath in the wonderfully descriptive and astute observations of everyday life, love, loss, happiness, and humanity. I couldn't help but stop, reread, and reflect upon many passages in this book. Michael Winter has really outdone himself. Minister without portfolio refers to the nickname that Henry is given and is defined as "you're not committed to anything but you got a hand in everywhere". less
