review 1: Here's the short version: this book had lots of issues relating to the poor pacing that pretty much ruined the cool base concept of modern reapers and commercialized zombie-making. Now, the vaguely rant-y version. Almost all my issues with this book come down to one thing: the pacing.Oh, the pacing. This book needed about two, three hundred more pages. I'm not saying that in a good, can't-get-enough way -- the whole thing just felt really rushed. We don't see much of Molly's normal life before she is whisked away to reaper school -- which especially stinks, because she lives in kind of an alternate version of our world, and I think we needed to see a bit more of this world's normal to really appreciate the upheaval Molly experiences. Same with life at the reaper boarding s... morechool; we don't get a chance to get a feel for it, not really. The character development felt similarly rushed. We are "told" a lot of the details because there really wasn't any time to have the author "show" us. The friends Molly meets at Nekyia are all introduced at once, and I still feel like I don't know any of them well; they were just kind of there. The love triangle was shoved at us in the first couple chapters, and made too obvious to allow for any sort of dramatic reveal later. Plot-wise, one or two clues were tossed out right before a big twist. I would have liked some more time to try to figure out what was going to happen, and it was a bit disappointing to have everything revealed so soon. Plus -- sadly -- the reveals were pretty expected nonetheless. One criticism that has nothing to do with the length of the book is my issue with the voice. The author did way too well with the teenage voice thing -- to the point where it got a bit exhausting. I felt like I was talking to a real teenager. You might like that. I sometimes enjoy that. Unfortunately, in this case, I didn't. Bottom line, the book had issues. You might be able to overlook that stuff if you really love the premise; the two stars I did give Undeadly were for the awesome idea behind it. For me, though, that wasn't quite enough.
review 2: "Sometimes, you choose your destiny, sometimes it chooses you, and sometimes...it's a little of both."Undeadly is about a girl named Molly who is a necromancer-in-training. The world Molly lives in is full of people who have "pet" zombies and a world where spirits are the new "illegal" slaves. Everything is going along normally for Molly until the night of her sixteenth birthday when she has a dream/vision of Anubis and accepts his challenge to become one of his chosen. But Molly isn't just one less
