review 1: Goose bump causing remembrance of the work African-American's have been doing since slavery to help their descendents. I was read this last year at a training and got goose bumps. Since then, it's become one of my favorites. Great for African American history month. The illustrations are remarkable, and there are awesome little paragraphs in the back to talk more about each of the people focused on in the book.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, which features illustrations from numerous famous children's book illustrators such as Leo and Diane Dillon and Bryan Collier. The book was inspired by phrases which began appearing on blogs and at rallies during the 2008 presidential election. Barack Obama's successful run for president is another success in Af... morerican Americanns' long list of accomplishments. The book takes you from slavery, to fighting in the Civil War, to running for freedom. Then it dedicates each following page to a famous African American. From Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens, to Rosa Parks, to justice Thurgood Marshall, readers are able to see a strong history of important figures who fought to make a better life for future generations of African Americans. Barack Obama holds the final page, and it is the hope of author Michelle Cook that because of him and his comrades, children can soar into the future and accomplish greater and greater things.Teachers and librarians should use this book not only during Black History Month, but anytime! less
