Hi guys!
As you might have suspected from my previous post, I love the app “Episode”, even if it has some drawbacks. So I thought, why not review the stories that I read on this app?? They are definitely different than books, but I don’t think it is actually easier to write considering you have to give the reader options (although I suspect some authors only give the illusion of choice). One of the stories, however where your choice does matter is The Ember Effect by Joseph Evans.
You are Ember Edwards, the least popular girl in school, but everything changes when you find a doorway to another world.
I really enjoyed reading this and I would have finished it in a few hours if I wasn’t held back by the number of passes you have. This is something I definitely see as a television series! As hinted at before, your choices really matter in this story. At the beginning you meet a guy who feels obligated to kill you. One of the things you could have the character (Ember Edwards) say was that he could go ahead and shoot, ’cause life had been nothing but misery anyway. I really chose this option to see how it would go and how the author was going to turn this around, because seriously, the main character can’t die right?? WRONG! I got shot and I died. Or rather Ember got shot and died. There are several moments throughout the story you can actually die if you don’t say the right thing. And a bonus (spoiler), you get to plan your own wedding!!
The second thing I really enjoyed was the fact that Evans was able to keep me on my toes. After the infamous Lady Astaria, a new villain arose. And after that another problem needed to be fixed. In a novel, it might have seemed to be a bit much, and not properly worked out, but in this form it works really well.
There is one thing I was a bit disappointed about. Ember gets into this new world through a universe splitter. You have to choose between the left and the right door. The first time around I chose the one on the right and followed the story. Later I learned that the two doors lead to the same place, but with a 50 years difference. So I started wondering, if I choose the other door next time, will a different story unfold… I tried…and it didn’t. It would have been amazing if this were to actually be so, but I don’t know in how far that is actually possible when creating a story on episode. It would have been truly amazing though.
