review 1: I liked this historical fiction mystery/romance set in the English court of Henry VIII, but I did not love it. I felt like the writing and plot were somewhere between a YA novel (except for the sex scenes) and a Harlequin romance (which I don't read). The novel is based on Dutch painter Susanna Horenbout and courtier John Parker, two little-known real-life historical figures. Truly, the characters felt very thin and flat to me and their relationship was not very compelling at all. I think I'll stick with Phillipa Gregory when I want to read books set in this time period.
review 2: If you love intrigue in Henry VIII's court, historical mysteries, and romance, you'll love this story by Michelle Diener. Susanna Horenbout arrives in England from The Netherlands
... more to be an illuminator for the king; the king's Master of Swords, John Parker, greets her just as a plot to take her life is set in motion. The stage is set for the love between them, and their attempt to get at the heart of the threat, which is ultimately directed at the king. It was interesting to note that the two main characters really existed, and were in fact a married couple. less

While a bit predictable there were enough surprises to keep me until the end and read the next.

The plot was interesting but was too shallow to maintain my interest.
