review 1: Miri has a secret that she must keep. Her older brother, Roland, is filling in as rector at a church. The congregation is wondering why their rector just left them without letting them know. The secret is that Miri's brother is mad and needs to be put in an asylum, but he is her sole support so she hides the fact which allows her to live in the rectory. He is very controlling and is constantly badgering her. Her younger brother who she adored is also missing and his friend Ethan comes to tell Miri that he has been murdered. Ethan is a street person who is consumed with a life of opium, women, and drink. After his friend Will, is murdered Ethan decides he needs God in his life and is on the path to recovery. There's romance, murder, mystery and salvation to keep the reader ... moreis suspense.
review 2: Based on the book description, you should be prepared that this is not a light read. I really loved this book---the time period (regency), the well-written characters, the plot twists, the spiritual themes, I could go on. Miri is trying to live day to day with her brother's worsening madness, keeping it from others so that she will not be thrown out into the street. Ethan is struggling with his past mistakes, which includes opium addiction, his friend's death, and possibly murder. Both characters are so wounded and are struggling to have a moment-by-moment faith in God. Even in the worst times, Miri and Ethan try to remember God is there. And it does get bad. Just when you think it can't get worse, it does. But of course, all is resolved in the end so take heart! Ms. Griep has a way with words---how she puts words together to create a picture for the reader is amazing. For example: "Out on the street, waiting for her with open arms, her old friend defeat embraced her, along with his companion-despair." It looks like Ms. Griep is working on a sequel (she's posted the 1st 2 chapters), I hope it gets published. I'd love to read more of her work! less

It has the flavor of a Charles Dickens novel. I want a book 2.

Clean romance. Not brilliantly written but nice, easy read.
