review 1: Great scary, thrilling fun from the author of "The Dragon of Trelian." This book is definitely meant for an older YA audience. The characters are high school students and, when not battling pretty frightening and gruesome demons, are deep in the throes of adolescent love 'n' lust issues. There's a great mixture of humor and horror, wry commentary mixed with action and suspense...and just a little bit of musical-theater-nerd trivia.
review 2: This was just so much fun to read. It was meant to be light and humorous and it's a story that doesn't take itself too seriously, which I appreciate. I also love a story that doesn't follow typical librarian stereotypes and being that this librarian is a evil demon, it certainly breaks the mold. Case in point - our main ... morecharacter Cynthia speculates that the American Library Association may be "stocking high schools across the country with hot young librarians as part of a massive literacy initiative." While there are plenty of instances where humor carries the story, there are still moments of seriousness: Cynthia's unwavering devotion to her best friend, the moment of clarity when she realizes that teachers are a lot more than what she sees each day in front of the classroom, and, of course, her all-consuming crush on Ryan. I think teens will appreciate a break from all the heavy fantasy books and enjoy this for what it is. less
