review 1: I received this as a giveaway. Thank you! This is really the first book I've read on mountaineering, but it has peaked my interest. I didn't know so much could go wrong, all of the trials with the oxygen sets, physical problems, boots freezing and food freezing. It gave me a new respect for the climbers. It was written clearly, without jargon, and interspersed throughout were quotes from the mens' separate books and diaries.
review 2: Not as thematically ambitious or as wonderfully written as Wade Davis's "Into the Silence" (a chronicle of the abortive British expeditions to Everest in the early 1920's), but still a sound and engaging account of the first successful ascent of Everest. ... moreritish, and plenty of excitement and interest to be had in his account of the final climb. Seriously let down, in my opinion, by a complete lack of adequate maps and a somewhat paltry photo section. Still, a competent book and worth the read. less
