review 1: Perhaps its because I'm teaching a mini astronomy class this year and just recently learned about the "dwarf planets" or perhaps it's because Pluto was officially demoted when I was on my mission and had no idea what was happening in the world--whatever the reason, I absolutely loved this book. Mike Brown has a delightfully fun writing style and a real gift for teaching complex science to the layperson. I also loved that he added plenty of personal touches by bringing in his personal life to match what was happening in his scientific discoveries. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even mildly interested in the solar system, planets, or just the night sky. And even if you aren't, read it anyway! It's a great book!
review 2: About two thirds of this bo
... moreok is a well-written and engaging account of scientific discovery and is probably worth 4 stars. Unfortunately, the other third is a tedious account of the author's personal life. I understand that getting married and having his first child are probably the most important events in the author's life; I just don't care. Let's be honest -- hearing stories of other people's spouses/children is like being forced to watch someone's home movies. A little less of his daily banalities and a little more hard science would have made this a considerably better reading experience. less

Funny book. Mike Bronw is not only a killer of planets, he is also a good writer.

Interesting story, but the guy really needs to dial down the ego.
