review 1: A very entertaining book! Some funny bits (and some not so funny bits) but all in all, a dandy tale! However, I must say (because I am a stickler) that there were parts that were so terribly unrealistic that it pulled me out of the story and I went, "Come on, dude...really?!" So I reminded myself - this is a work of fiction and I am being entertained, not looking to criticize ;) It seemed a tad long... to be perfectly honest I was at around 43% and thought I had reached the high-climactic part of the story, but there was much more to the story than meets the eye, that's for sure ;) I would offer a word of warning though as far as content: there is a fair bit of profanity, some mild sex-scenes and just basically, not for the "safe reader"
review 2: I lived in Al
... moreaska as a young child and her stark and rugged beauty is always in the back of my mind. So I am always pleased to read something about Alaska when I can. Delany's story reminded me of the homestead property my parents had.The darkness of the early winters and the never quite dark of summers have been know to drive a few good men and women crazy. Hard Case Calis, the old Alaska State Trooper, and Haywood Jennings, the flying veterinarian think their friend Gus may have gone a little mad. Gus spends a summer on Moose Jaw Creek where he builds a cabin, finds a ravaged red-haired beauty, and murders the man who had sexually molested her. Things become complicated when the woman disappears, the cabin where he shot the man has burned down to the ground seemingly years ago and he is attacked by a grizzly bear that he manages to kill. An old case file contains many of the ingredients to give seem bases to Gus's story except that they occured more than fourty years ago. "The Moose Jaw" is a story of knowledge of the bush living in Alaska with a tale of suspense, romance, and action thrown in to create a great story. I hope to read more of Alaska by this very good author. less
