review 1: Okay, so maybe I didn't give this book enough of a chance, but the language was so bland I just couldn't deal and I had to stop some 50 pages in. No subtlety at all, which doesn't work for me. I'd recommend this book for someone who likes a relationship story. I think it's very realistic and it might even have a slash of feel-good, but I don't have enough experience with those to judge for sure.
review 2: I have to be honest and say I almost gave up on this book about 30 pages in. Also, having baby brain, it took me about 100 pages before I realised that the book started at the back and the front, for the Stag and the Hen. I found this very irritating. Also, there didn't seem to be any particular order to read it in. It's done as two separate stories. I am a bi
... moreg Mike Gayle fan and have read several of his other books. However, I didn't take to this book much, although I actually quite liked some of the story. So what didn't I like - the 'unfinished' endings, the lack of realism in the women's dialogue in many instances, plus one major thing that the bride-to-be, Helen hadn't done with regard to her wedding, which simply would not have happened - I don't care how mixed up she was - the author simply does not know women in this regard and it showed. Now, to my main bugbear - spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, a terrible lack of punctuation, which had me reading and re-reading sentences trying to work out what they said; extra words and missing words - this book doesn't appear to have been properly edited. What DID I like - the Stag side of the book was far better than the Hen. I liked the interaction with Phil and Sanne, however improbable. I could imagine them outside the posh nightclub, as well as Phil's lot meeting up with the Essex guys. The father's involvement seemed rather too far-fetched, but didn't bother me one way or the other. I think the portrayal of Phil's sister as superbitch was well done and although I saw the additional twists which were to come, they integrated well. I liked Phil as a character and Yaz, Helen's best friend. For me, not one of his best. I've been reliably informed that The Importance of Being a Bachelor is much better, so suffice to say it hasn't put me off Mike Gayle's books, more that I was surprised and disappointed with this one. 2.5-3 stars from me. less
