Wes Darling Mystery
review 1: I give this book five stars because it was exactly what I wanted it to be: quick, easy summer reading! The mystery-solver lives on a sailboat moored at Key West, and meets exactly the kind of people you hope will inhabit an easy summer-reading Key West murder mystery: a bartender, a stripper, a psychic, and a psycho! BTW, two of the above are the same person. He has issues with his mother and the family business that he tried to leave behind in Detroit, but it comes to find him in Paradise. He gets hit in the head and tied up a lot! Fun reading!
review 2: This Kindle book was free for a brief period of time and I decided to try it since I had just the day before mentioned to Carl that I thought it would be fun to go back to Key West one of these years. So
... more, what better way to do it than by reading! This author is a "live aboard" on his 36' sailboat Rough Draft, which is also the name of the boat moored in Key West in the book. The story is told first person by retired, reluctant PI Wes Darling. Darling's family has been in the business since Pinkerton days, but Wes himself has decided that he is not cut out for the business. He may be good at it, but he can't live with consequences when things go wrong, namely that an abducted girl was killed when he was a hired to save her.So, 30 year old Wes has "dropped out," and is living on his sailboat, bartending at Dirty Alvin's in Key West, happy and carefree. Then he learns that his friend, former coworker and father figure, Nick Hastings was shot to death on Smathers Beach. Why was he in Key West? How is he going to tell his mother? He knows that his mother is going to try to talk him into taking over the investigation, which he is reluctant to do, but won't be able to not do. And thus the reluctant PI story begins.KEY LIME BLUES is a steady, easy read with a very likable PI (and the last name of "Darling" is a whole lot of fun). The femme fatale is the woman that needs to be found and quite refreshingly, Darling does not fall under her spell. Not that Darling is without a romantic interest. The story is full of action, twists, quirky Key West characters, out of control bad guys (and girl) and is knitted together quite nicely. If you like PI novels, I recommend you give this one a try. less

I liked all the Darling jokes. Too much of a noir mystery for me.
