review 1: Really enjoyed this one. The artwork is great but... Stan Sakai, so you should know it's great already! It was interesting to get to hear about/see his creative process. I had a little trouble keeping track of characters in the story - it seemed like there were a lot! I wasn't familiar with the story of the 47 Ronin and really appreciated the background information and some of the ways the story has evolved over time. Great book!
review 2: It's the classic Japanese historical story about a guy who was disgraced and executed, and his 47 retainers who fought to avenge his honor. There are tons of versions of this story, but this one is streamlined and easy to follow, and it works really well to introduce the story to American audiences. I like Stan Sakai's a... morertwork, but at times it comes off as a bit too cartoony for the seriousness of the story. Still, it's rather lovely, and he sells the action and emotion quite well. Definitely recommended. less
