review 1: Asher Levine quit the LAPD when the witness he was protecting (and also sleeping with) was murdered. He was suspended by his mentor and lieutenant and felt betrayed. He cannot forgive himself. He is the son of Holocaust survivors and a former member of the Israeli army. His mentor, Duffy, offers him his job back when a retired cop is found murdered. Ash comes back in the hopes that he can also find the person who murdered his witness. The two cases intertwine. He is a like able character who knows his way around the downtown LA area. Working without a partner, he gets into a number of jams but he manages to work his way out of them.
review 2: I read Corwin's Midnight Alley before this novel and really enjoyed the lead character and the story. In this ... morefirst novel, Detective Ash isn't as likeable. As a first novel, I think the author was trying to hard to make the story darker and edgier. The whole relationship with the cheating girlfriend was unnecessary and detracted from the story. Detective Ash is Jewish and the prejudice he experiences and the fact that his father was a Holocaust survivor are a large part of the story. His overwhelming prejudice and hate regarding Germans of today, is very unattractive and a big turn-off for the story. I read the books out of order, if I had read this one first I would have skipped Midnight Alley. I won't be looking for the third novel. less
