review 1: I'm not certain why I picked this book, other than it was free and seemed to promise historical fiction. That it does, though it turned out to be more of a romance novel than I would normally pick. Blend in weird superstition and an excess of Catholicism, a villainess, four star-crossed lovers, two stubborn old men, and the inevitable happy ending, and you pretty much have it. A handful of unfortunate typos, but far fewer than what seems the norm for books these days. Not a tale to make a woman wish she could time travel but as an afternoon's escape, not bad.
review 2: Three stars is a generous rating for this book. The writing itself is very average. She describes things, but she doesn't use beautiful language, just generic words. My biggest complaint was t
... morehe lack of accuracy. There was no middle class in the thirteenth century. The characters enjoyed a well-to-do lifestyle, yet they were farmers working the land. Farmers have a hard life and don't make much money. There were no floods, droughts, fires, late freezes or any of the other problems farmers always face. There were very few injuries or sicknesses and all the villagers except the beggars lived idyllic lives. This is like a fairy tale land, not life in the Middle Ages. It would have made a good fairy tale, I actually enjoyed the plot when I wasn't thinking about how inaccurate it was. less
