review 1: Cute, modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice. Who can resist a modern-day Darcy, really? I liked the banter between William and Beth, and their dynamic. Even though we all know how it's going to end, it was a fun journey. Jenna and Les were cute & I was glad Beth had such an awesome BFF. Though I get that Lidia/Lindy is part of the main story, that character still irks me in every adaptation. Argh. And her parents; so unconcerned at one point, then desperate to have Beth on the scene later. Super glad those aren't my folks - I would need a lot of therapy. Lots of sizzle without making you blush. Glad that their relationship took some time to develop, but still had squee moments dispersed throughout.
review 2: If you've read the source material, don't read this.C
... moreoming from someone who read and reread the source material for this book many times during my decade-long Jane Austen binge, I can say that this modern "revamp", if you will, was disappointing at best. The idea was good, but the execution turned out to be pretty poor. In transitioning the world and romance of Elizabeth Bennett and William Darcy into something modern, I feel Pulsipher stripped the story of the simple, bare-bones charm and wisdom rich content that the original novel contained.Don't get me wrong, it was actually pretty-well written and the first half was very promising. It stayed true to the original novel without being bland or entirely unoriginal, and the characterization of the main characters' reincarnations was spot-on and very interesting. I have nothing to say about that first bit other than that it's the reason this book earned three stars instead of one, as the ending would warrant. The last half of this novel is where things started to fall off. Specifically, the part after Jaxon arrived on the scene and I was full to the brim with dramatic irony waiting for Beth to receive her rude awakening. I simply had no patience for the fluff and filler that the author inserted into this bit; it killed the suspense for me, which is never good, and bored me to the point that I honestly considered giving up on the book at many points. I kept reading dutifully, waiting for it to pick up again, but that wait was long and torturous. This is exactly what I meant when I said how this re-imagining sacrificed the original novel's brilliance. In the source material there was no need for Austen to signify to the readers how "in love" Elizabeth and Darcy were after the rising action or climax; the strength with which she wrote about Linda/y's dishonoring and Elizabeth's painful realizations about how very wrong she had been about Darcy; and all the realizations and confessions that arose as a result made the need for such overdrawn scenes pointless.Another thing I'm shocked and disappointed about is the lack of Darcy's rushing in to save Linda, as per the original novel, despite the tension between himself and Elizabeth. That was so indicative of Darcy's character and so important in the dynamic between them that this novel was left with a resounding emptiness of filler and fluff where that scene should have been.Overall, I think I'll stick with the source material. No, modern re-imaginings of classic novels don't necessarily have to touch on every detail (which is why I've excused the author's leaving out the bit about Charlotte and Colin), but there are some things that must not be disturbed, and they were here. less
