review 1: I can't remember the last time I read a Harlequin! But having met the author in person at a local event and thoroughly enjoying her delightful sense of humor, I decided to pick up one of her books to read. This one is a contemporary romance set on a ranch, but it also had a great international twist with the hero devoting his career to building pumps and water systems in Darfur. Jack and Mia are married in name only, apparently to ensure Mia and her family weren't ousted from their own ranch by Jack's thoroughly awful abusive mom. Of course they secretly do love each other, but Jack basically has to have the shit bombed out of him in Darfur to figure this out. He returns to Mia's ranch to recover both physically and emotionally from the attack. Of course, after much hand w... moreringing and poor communication, they eventually end up fixing things between them and riding off into the sunset (pretty literally since they live on a ranch).Harlequins have improved since I read them back in the 80s, if this book is any indicator. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. As per the Harlequin formula, they took a long-ass time to get past the stupid issues and actually communicate with one another. But it's better than the ones where the heroine would see her hero hugging another woman and instantly run off to Left Armpit, Montana, convinced that her man was a cheater (when in fact he was hugging his sister). The part where Mia is bemoaning her large breasts is a bit hard to take - I don't know too many beautiful skinny chicks who gripe about big breasts. That's usually reserved for us large, not-so-skinny chicks whose boobs have been battened on by babies and too much junk food. I may have shaken my fist at that point. This one falls into my "great airplane book" category - although admittedly, I read most of it on the subway. I'll probably pick up her latest new release for another great light read.
review 2: HIS WIFE FOR ONE NIGHT by author Molly O'Keefe is an emotional read throughout. A sexy interlude with Mia makes Jack rethink their relationship...and their future. But all his plans grind to a halt when she asks for a divorce. Once upon a time, Jack might have agreed. But now that he knows the chemistry they share, he's not giving up a second chance to be with his wife. And Mia had always loved Jack and want to be with him but finds it hard because she believes Jack will leave her. Great characters and a great story. less
