review 1: I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Quite a few of the romance novels that I've read as of late have been one of two things. They are either pure fluff, like cotton candy- sickly sweet overload, stuck in your teeth, and then, poof! Gone. Or they are so overloaded with sex scenes that they lose any point to the plot other than physical gratification. Not so here. The book actually started out just a bit slow for me, and I kind of felt like I'd tuned in to a show already in progress. The story still pulled me in pretty quickly though, mainly because Ashley was just such a likable character. It was so refreshing to have a likable heroine. (Most of the time, the heroine is the part of the romance novel that gets on my nerves!) She is sweet without being a push-over. I... more loved how she never gave up on Brody, even when he really deserved a swift kick in his backside. Her compassion for the peripheral characters was touching. The side story with Brody's brother Sean was sweet as well.Brody. Oh, my heart ached for him. I didn't want to like him, but I just couldn't help myself. I just wanted to reach into the book and hug him. He had me tearing up so many times while I read this- and that rarely ever happens anymore. He had so much growth in his character. Molly O'Keefe really shows his character's growth and lets you get inside his head. Terrific.I will definitely be continuing with this series, and will read more by this author. She is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine. 4 1/2 stars.
review 2: Ashley Montgomery could have had a privileged and glamorous life, but as far as she was concerned being a Montgomery was far from being herself. She was constantly lacking in her mother's eyes, never meeting expectations. She wasn't skinny enough, wasn't elegant enough, wasn't accomplished enough. To be herself she traveled halfway across the world and worked as an aid worker helping to establish health clinics and much needed community centers. Anything to stay away. Then she was taken by Somali Pirates and Brody Braxter was brought back to save her. Brody has been working as a bodyguard since he was forced to retire as a Marine. But it was a job ten years ago that changed his life forever. As bodyguard to the Montgomerys' children, he met the one woman that captured his heart and was now missing. Being with Brody again after a terrifying three week ordeal was surreal. Taming her feelings once again would be difficult enough if the man of her dreams didn't drive her crazy half the time. Convincing him they were good together was an impossible task. Brody always kept happiness at arms length and Ashley a little further away, but denying her again, might be too much for any sane man. Brody and Ashley's story is politically driven, emotionally intense and touching. It manages to involve the best of families and the worst of them. The intrigue and corruption of politics with the integrity of the best of men. The passion and love of young and old lovers and the chance to make it all worth while. It is sweet and sour and quite frankly, perfect. less
