review 1: The topic of explorers and the moments when history changes are fascinating to me. The storytelling in this non-fiction narrative is brisk and lively, moving from when gorillas are discovered in the wild to the way gorillas take over popular imagination, particularly in the UK. The author has taken a lot of time and care to explore various avenues of life in the era and the book is textured and rich in places. The chapters are short and the narrative choppy when it shifts through various important people of the times and through major events. I'm not sure how else Monte Reel could have done it - there is a lot of ground to cover, and the book is mainly enjoyable and informative.
review 2: Ah, the life of the mid 1800s African explorer. Shooting gorillas, native
... mores carrying your many packs, bringing smallpox to every village you visit, all for fame back in England. Interesting story of a less well remembered gorilla hunter and otherwise nice guy explorer, whose books about his exploits inspired many a later writer and filmmaker. Well written, though on the whole not as exciting a story as one would hope. less
