review 1: Wow~ This story was amazing. Great for young adults but can touch any age. I loved the symbolism, the idea that temptation is all around, and will we succumb or fall victim to its jaws? Will we inhale what we always wanted realizing we have nothing left to breathe? Juniper is a very likeable character, one who is living in a shadow of her parent's successes, left behind. Looks through a monocular to see the world she cannot grasp. To desparately be part of a world she is forced not to explore. I loved this book. Best young adult book I've read so far.
review 2: Juniper is living every childs dream. Her parents are famous movie stars and she lives in a huge mansion that's ripe for exploring, but there's something wrong. She's incredibly lonely and her parents ar
... moree no longer the kind, loving people they used to be. They're now distant, if not outright rude toward her. After meeting her neighbour, a young boy named Giles, who's having the same problem. They both set out to solve the mystery.I would give this book 2.5 stars. It was alright, the characters are sympathetic and the plot is quite intriguing, but there's just something that seems to be missing. The author tells more than she shows, and (I realize that it's a children's book) Juniper's former relationship with her parents seems so idealized that i had a hard time taking it seriously. There were also far too many things that were left hanging. Who is Skeksyl? What world did he come from? Who were his followers?I would not reccommend this book to people over the age of 12. I feel like there are too many holes in the book for older readers to be able to enjoy. However, younger readers are probably not going to take notice of it and I think that the book can be very enjoyable for them. less
