review 1: Because one part of my lineage connects with the Bruce line, I always enjoy reading about them. In this book, the author uses 3 narrators. Bruce and Edward II have distinct voices but Douglas not so much. That is a hard technique to manage. Read the book and see what you think. I thought the battle scenes were handled well, not to graphic but realistic enough for me to bookmark for future writing reference. The daughter Margery is a minor character but one which jumped off the page for me. Definitely worth reading.

... moreory.This novel gives a good sense of the long grind of war and the exhaustion of people who must constantly fight and then flee, by foot and horseback. The history and tangled conflicts of Scotland are explained clearly without slowing the story. Historic personages are well-rounded with believable flaws.I actually finished this in about a week, but am tardy in updating. less
