review 1: Short vignettes telling the story of what it was like growing up in China in the 1970's. Enjoyable with cute art, but I wish it were longer. However, the audience is children, so it's probably the perfect length to provide a picture of what growing up in China was like during this time period. Lots of bits that kids will be able to relate to their own lives - what happens when they leave some food on their plate, going to school, how they spend holidays and normal days, and so on.
review 2: An intriguing glimpse of the experience of being a child in 1970s China, a period of transition between the death of Mao Zedong and the opening up of the country to the west. This memoir provides only brief and tantalising details of the education system, One Child policy, a... moregrarian reform, Chinese folklore and mythology: enough to jog the memory for those of us who studied communist China at school or to whet the appetite for those who know nothing of this fascinating if sometimes terrifying ascendant superpower. less
