review 1: i loved, loved, loved this book. i'm a sucker for a good historical fiction, and this one did not disappoint. nancy horan is the author of "loving frank" - one of my favorite historical fiction books about frank lloyd wright and his affair with mamah cheney. this book is about english author robert louis stevenson and his relationship with fanny osbourne. i've heard his name many times, but i honestly didn't know a thing about him or what he had written. fanny is such a strong, nurturing woman - she sacrificed so much and her devotion to louis is unmatched. their adventures and tragedies almost seem unreal. nancy horan does an incredible job of researching her subject matter (this book took 5 years!), and she is truly a gifted writer. she really brought this story ... moreto life!
review 2: This book on the lives of Robert Louis Stevenson and Fanny, his wife, had an interesting first few chapters focused on Fanny and her children. I found the section where she met Robert slow and almost stopped reading the book. I'm glad I persisted, however. The story of their marriage and travels are engaging. It comes across as an amazing love story between this great writer and the woman who supported him through life-threatening illness and creative struggles while trying to maintain her own talents. less
